Estelle L. Roberge was born in Biddeford, Maine, the sixth of nine children, and raised in a Franco-American Irish-Canadian household. She graduated from the Portland School of Art and the University of Southern Maine in the 1980s. After earning an MFA, she taught in Maine, Utah, and New Mexico, where she continues to reside. Her collages explore visual ideas through photographs and papers developed in the studio and regional environment. Her inspiration comes from textiles, marbles, and wilderness areas, creating layered surfaces that form entirely new images. Photographs of textiles suggest gesture, movement, and spatial relationships, allowing her work to shift between abstraction and narration. In “Terpsichore: Les Danseuses de Claude Simon”, she constructs a sense of childhood awe, wildness of being, and wonder.
