Wen.
As an artist and fashion designer, Wen’s practice explores the interplay of materials, focusing on their inherent properties, limitations, and emotional qualities. His creative process is driven by continuous exploration, iteration, and refinement, balancing imagination and execution. Wenyu Zheng was born and raised in Hangzhou, China, and holds a Master’s degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where he was awarded the SAIC Merit Scholarship, as well as the Luminart Fellowship and the Fashion Council Fellowship. He has held solo exhibitions, including The Beach After 25 Mins at the Dean’s Office at SAIC, where he explored material experimentation through silica gel, cyanotype, and textile-based structures, as well as a solo exhibition in SAIC’s Fashion Department. The concept of Fragment emerged as a pivotal framework in Wen’s artistic and design philosophy. One night, while lying in bed, the idea of "platform" was the first word that surfaced in his mind. However, he ultimately gravitated toward the term Fragment as the foundation for this concept. It serves as his conceptual approach to design and artistic creation, reflecting his fascination with the fragmented nature of memory and thought. By weaving together disparate elements, he refines and reconstructs ideas to uncover new possibilities. This approach manifests through a meticulous layering of textiles, digital fabrication, and sculptural elements, where materiality and structure merge into a fluid, ever-evolving narrative. Currently, he is investigating the intersection of digital fabrication and textile structures, integrating techniques such as laser cutting and 3D modeling to explore the fusion of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship.
